Private Health Insurance Changes to Pilates

Private Health Insurance Changes to Pilates

By Phebe Liston

From April 1, 2019, private health insurers will no longer provide extras cover for a range of natural therapies. But rest assured, physiotherapy rebates are not affected.

Physiotherapy sessions that consist of Pilates-informed exercises as part of an individual consultation, group or class will continue to be eligible for private health insurance rebates. Classes that comply with these changes are known as Physio Exercise  Classes.

WHAT IS A PHYSIO EXERCISE CLASS?
Physio Exercise Classes utilise the Pilates equipment in an individualised approach with exercise programs designed for:
  • Injury rehabilitation
  • Injury prevention
  • Improving joint mobility and stability
  • Decreasing pain
  • Improving balance and coordination
  • Decreasing falls risk
Classes are provided under the guidance of highly trained physiotherapists and consist of up to 4 people, each working through their own individualised program.

WHY WOULD I BENEFIT FROM THIS CLASS?
When recovering from an injury, a tailored exercise program is a key part of your rehabilitation program. We typically recommend home exercises to compliment your in clinic program and find that compliance to your exercise based rehab is heightened when attending a Physio Exercise Class 1-2 times per week. The recommended duration of your program will vary depending on your individual situation and should be discussed with your treating physiotherapist.

SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PHYSIO EXERCISE CLASS AND A PILATES CLASS?
Specific ‘Pilates’ classes will still be offered by Anne Heuperman from Mountain Pilates. These are not claimable under private health extras cover but are a great option for those after a whole body exercise specifically designed to strengthen your body, while providing muscle flexibility & joint mobility. Pilates promotes balance, muscle development, and efficiency of movement while focussing on breath, mindfulness and control. These are also an option for those rehabilitating from an injury, with input from the treating physiotherapist. However, for those who require specific supervision from the physio or who want to claim their sessions under private health, the Physio Exercise Classes will be best for you.
